The histories of all the great nations of the world are tales of huge struggles and agitations often fraught with skirmishes and tremendous setbacks. There are to be found – unending tales of failed legislation, failed national projects, national campaigns that do not get off the ground, segments of the country that break out in civil wars in secession bids or others, the social malaises of corruption, treasonable tendencies and every other imaginable bad blood!
These stories are told because they are great stories and most of all, because the various nations precipitating them have all survived to become giant communities; great nation-states, inspirational centres of civilisation, unity, each and every one of them symbolic of the growth and development of the human race.
Nigeria is no less an even greater nation in the making.
The advantages at Nigeria’s beck and call today are invisible to only those who unfortunately possess no power of foresight. Only the so gifted will realise that Nigeria is made great by the facts that her present malaises are only a fraction of the traumas residing in the histories of the world’s greatest nations. It is from this position that we must come to appreciate the impending greatness of Nigeria especially when they also come to reckon with the facts that Nigeria could still have been worst off – if it weren’t for the uniqueness of her highly diversified yet peace and progress loving citizenry!
The occasion of nineteen unbreakable years of civil rule in Nigeria becomes reflective of all our unmet expectations and the hope of a better Nigeria where good governance and zero tolerance to corruption becomes the highpoints of our national consciousness.
This consciousness is what has inspired the National Democracy Solidarity Walk, an event of the National Democracy Stakeholders Group (NDSG); however this document is an attempt at emphasizing the benefits of the WALK as inherent in the deliberate celebration of Nigeria’s emerging greatness. It demonstrates the philosophical and psychological dimensions of the good this could do to Nigeria’s nationalism and help her democratic growth.
………. Today and still moving forward, the opportunity awaits Nigeria for her to step up and still make good of the essence of her nation state .
